Primary Provider
Mikaela started Head and Heart Childcare in October of 2020. You can read more about her background and experience below. She primarily cares for the older group of children, but enjoys the chances she gets to have the little ones join her crew. She especially enjoys planning outings and fun activities for the children to partake in.

Philosophy
We chose the name Head and Heart Childcare to make the focus of our facility clear from the get go. Our main goals are to stimulate children's minds while speaking love, worth and purpose to their hearts. We believe one cannot go without the other. Children learn best when they feel safe and loved. This allows their minds to focus on what is in front of them. Children learn naturally, and here at Head and Heart Childcare, we believe we are simply facilitators of this. Keeping this in mind, we seek to offer each child choices in their environment and enable learning to be a process of fun and discovery. Throughout each day, the children will play, eat, learn, rest, and interact with their peers and authorities. In each of these activities, we seek to foster self-control and appropriate expression of emotion with comforting guidance that seeks to understand each child's specific and individual needs.
Background
The founder and director of Head and Heart Childcare, Mikeala Thieme, grew up in a small town in Eastern Oregon. She started working with children when she was in middle school. Mikaela would babysit, volunteer and eventually find jobs in childcare. When her interests turned to midwifery, Mikaela started to study in utero development of babies and then their early development outside the womb. Later, personal experiences lead her to both study and take classes on early childhood brain development, the affects of trauma on the brain, and the many disorders that stem from early exposure to trauma. These things have deeply impacted Mikaela and have given her a unique perspective on a child's growth and development. From this foundation, she has formed Head and Heart Childcare to meet each child's unique needs. Mikaela knows that these early years are absolutely foundational and takes her work with children very seriously. She is passionate about continuing to build her understanding of these wonderful humans that she gets the pleasure of working with and will be continuing her education to further improve her techniques.

The Home
Head and Heart Childcare is a Certified Childcare Home that offers care to 16 children at a time, with two staff caring for the two separate groups. See "Our Groups" page for more information about how we split up the group and their individual spaces.
